GMOA will initiate indefinite trade union action starting tomorrow

2)The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) has resolved to initiate an island-wide indefinite trade union strike beginning tomorrow (January 26). The decision was made in response to allegations that the Ministry of Health failed to implement agreed-upon solutions.

Speaking at a media briefing this afternoon (25), Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa, Secretary of the GMOA, stated that the trade union action will begin at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow and will have an impact on services at government hospitals around the country.

Dr. Sugathadasa stated that as part of the trade union action, GMOA members will halt prescribing drugs that must be acquired from external pharmacies as well as ordering laboratory testing for patients.

He said the Central Committee of the GMOA will meet on Wednesday (28) to discuss the matter. Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa added that if their demands are not met, they will not hesitate to intensify the trade union action.

The GMOA also staged a 48-hour token strike based on several demands from 8:00 a.m. on 23 January.
